Shortly after Shen was born in South Africa, his parents moved north towards the Limpopo River close to the Zimbabwean border, because they were freedom fighters in the liberation movement and therefore hunted by the apartheid government. So luckily, Shen’s childhood was spent in the extremes of Southern Africa’s landscapes, the only white boy for miles, absorbing indigenous sounds. After immersing himself in the rural rhythms of Africa, the family made their way down to Cape Town when Nelson Mandela became president in a then free country in 1994. This is where he began his formal music training at the age of ten and completed his music degree at the University of Cape Town at the age of 22. Shen’s music blends the Western music stream he learnt with the diversity of the African eccentricity he absorbed as a child.

Why SHENFM?

Shen took to the concept of forming a band that could play all genres, mixes and styles of music – like a radio station. Hence the band name – SHENFM. When the band plays live, they weave each song into another without stopping, flowing from one song to the next just like a radio station would create an exciting mix of music that gets the listeners on their feet in the thrill of the sound. They do this not only with their original compositions as heard on the album, Season One, but also with their own takes of contemporary songs that can be heard on the soon to launch online radio station at www.shenfm.com. Shen named his first album Season One because it is the opening album in a continuing series that the group want you to enjoy. He has renamed the tracks ‘Episodes’, as they tie into actual episodes that you can watch online shenfm.com soon! Please join us on this musical journey.
